Independent CHILDES study

How is caregiver speech associated with children’s language? I examined existing transcripts in English, Mandarin, and Spanish, using CLAN and R to study wh-questions, utterance length, and lexical diversity.

I carried out the analysis and writing with guidance from Dr. Jean Tang. The study did not find statistically significant associations between wh-question use and either child-language measure in the sample. It is an exploratory working paper, not a published finding.

Earlier laboratory work

At the Language and Cognitive Neuroscience Lab at Teachers College, Columbia University, I reviewed and coded Spanish-language child-interview data for analysis. I also proposed a comparison of how children learn numbers across English, Mandarin, and Spanish.

The CHILDES project is a separate, independent analysis of existing recordings. I did not recruit its participants or collect its recordings.

Historical research

My paper on the Bracero Program draws on existing interviews and historical scholarship to examine the program’s legacy. This work uses primary and secondary sources; the interviews were collected by others.

Reporting and editing

I write and edit for Maroon, my school newspaper. My reporting includes student accommodations and other issues in school life.
